From military fortress to convict depot back to military fortress to prison; Spike Island experienced significant change throughout the 19th and early 20th Century. Cal McCarthy, co-author of the Spike island history book ‘Too Beautiful for Thieves and Pickpockets’, will discuss these changes and examine their visible manifestations on the island, now a Cork County Council run visitor attraction that was recently voted Europe’s Leading Visitor Attraction.
